Tamil Nadu Charts Next Phase of Wind Energy Growth as IWTMA Unveils Energy Transition Roadmap

As India accelerates its clean energy transition, Tamil Nadu is poised to play a defining role in shaping the country’s next chapter of wind energy growth. Reinforcing this vision, the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) commissioned a report titled “Action Items for Energy Transition in Tamil Nadu”, outlining strategic interventions to enhance the state’s position as India’s wind energy leader.

The report served as the foundation for discussions at the Tamil Nadu Wind India Leadership Summit 2026, which brought together senior government officials, policymakers and industry leaders to deliberate on the policy priorities needed to unlock the state’s renewable energy potential.

The summit brought together senior government officials, policymakers and industry leaders for focused roundtable discussions on Tamil Nadu’s role in India’s energy transition. Led by P. N. Sridhar, Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL); Anil Meshram, Principal Secretary, Energy, Government of Tamil Nadu; Dr. S. Vijayakumar, Additional Chief Secretary, Industries, Investment Promotion & Commerce Department, Government of Tamil Nadu; Rajesh Kulhari, Joint Secretary (Wind), Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE); Dr. Rajesh Katyal, Director General, National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE); and Shri Sivakumar Vepakomma, Director – Power Systems, Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI); the deliberations focused on strengthening collaboration between government and industry to accelerate investments, enhance manufacturing competitiveness and unlock the state’s next phase of wind energy growth.

The report presents a roadmap focused on improving policy execution and fostering a more conducive investment environment through CapEx subsidies. It also outlines measures to promote wind repowering, develop manufacturing hubs around Ennore and VOC Port, advance Green Energy Corridor planning, offshore wind development and grid readiness.

Additionally , it also places special emphasis on accelerating wind turbine and component exports from Tamil Nadu. Currently, The state exports wind turbines and components worth over ₹1,000 crore annually, supporting thousands of direct and indirect jobs. Building on its established manufacturing ecosystem, the report outlines measures to further strengthen Tamil Nadu’s position as a global wind manufacturing and export hub.

Dr. Saravanan Manickam, Vice Chairman & Secretary, Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA), “Tamil Nadu has long been the foundation of India’s wind energy ecosystem, with the industrial capability, skilled workforce and natural resources to lead the sector’s next era of growth. As global demand for clean energy technologies continues to rise, the state has a unique opportunity to strengthen its position not only as India’s wind manufacturing hub but also as a globally competitive export base. The deliberations at today’s summit reaffirm the importance of sustained collaboration between government and industry to unlock this opportunity and shape the future of India’s wind sector.”

Aditya Pyasi, CEO, Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA), said, “As India’s renewable energy landscape evolves, creating an enabling ecosystem for investment and timely project execution will be critical to sustaining growth. The recommendations presented in this report are intended to support policy dialogue around strengthening manufacturing, expanding exports, improving infrastructure and creating an investment-friendly ecosystem.”

Through these recommendations, the report envisions Tamil Nadu strengthening its renewable manufacturing base, making wind repowering commercially viable, developing transmission infrastructure ahead of demand and establishing itself as India’s leading offshore wind manufacturing and export hub; creating a strong foundation for sustainable industrial growth, energy security and long-term economic competitiveness.
