Infineon Technologies has introduced the XDP8HD40S-1, a high-voltage hot-swap controller designed to protect and monitor power distribution in next-generation AI servers operating at 800 VDC and ±400 VDC. The device provides digital power-path protection, allowing power modules, converters and server subsystems to be connected or disconnected without disrupting system operation.
For eeNews Europe readers, the move from traditional 48 V distribution to higher-voltage AI server architectures brings new challenges in managing inrush currents, transient events and power-switch protection. The new 800 VDC hot-swap controller addresses these requirements while adding monitoring and diagnostic capabilities for high-density computing systems.
The XDP8HD40S-1 integrates digital Safe Operating Area (SOA) control with programmable and preconfigured protection functions. A variable-pulse SOA control mode, referred to as Boost Mode, helps optimise startup behaviour while keeping the external power switch within its operating limits.
An integrated gate driver supports external silicon carbide (SiC) cascode configurations combining MOSFETs and JFETs. The controller is compatible with Infineon’s OptiMOS MOSFETs and CoolSiC JFETs, enabling designers to implement high-voltage protection stages using the company’s existing power semiconductor portfolio.
Additional features include surge immunity protection and fast power-switch shutdown with a configurable 1.5 A pull-down current.
“Future AI data centers require power delivery systems that combine high efficiency, maximum reliability, and comprehensive protection capabilities,” said Magdalene Boebel, Senior Vice President and Business Line Head of Power System ICs at Infineon. “The XDP8HD40S-1 enables system designers to implement reliable hot-swap solutions for ±400 V and 800 V power architectures while providing the monitoring and protection features needed to maximize server uptime and operational efficiency.”
The 800 VDC hot-swap controller includes a PMBus 1.5 interface with enhanced security features for integration into data centre management systems. A built-in black-box recording function captures critical events to support fault analysis and debugging.
For power monitoring, the device integrates 12-bit current and voltage analogue-to-digital converters. Infineon specifies measurement accuracy of approximately 1% for voltage and current, 3% for power, and 1.5% for analogue power monitoring.
Integrated energy metering enables continuous tracking of power consumption, while programmable overvoltage, undervoltage and overtemperature protection functions support system reliability.
The XDP8HD40S-1 targets two-wire 800 V and ±400 V intermediate bus converters, GPU power systems, 1,500 V intermediate bus converter applications, battery backup systems and peak-shaving architectures.
It supports VDDB supply voltages from 4.5 V to 24 V and VDDA voltages from 4.5 V to 13.2 V.
The controller extends Infineon’s portfolio for AI data centre power architectures, complementing its existing 800 V-to-48 V and direct-conversion reference designs with protection and monitoring functions at the rack and server level.
